Blood pythons are from Sumatra, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Western Malaysia, Bangka Island and other islands in the Strait of Malacca (including the Lingga, Riau and Pinang islands). Despite being considered nervous and quick to bite, many people find them very tame and gentle, especially after they mature.

They reach between 5 - 7 feet ( 1.5 - 2 meters ) with females growing larger. They live on average more than 25 years. In the wild they eat mice, rats and rabbits and all number of small mammals, but in captivity feed mostly on mice and rats. They reach sexual maturity at three to four years. Female will lay 18 - 30 eggs and remains with them without feeding until they hatch. The eggs hatch after about 2-2.5 months.

Being a medium sized snake, blood pythons grow surpisingly large girth, comparable to much larges species. They get their name from the reddish skin coloration which they get as they mature, after 2-3 years. In their range they are hunted by people for their skins and meat.

The most important thing to remember and take care of when keeping blood pythons is keeping the adequate temperature and humidity. Especially at young age they require higher than other snakes humudity. The temperature gradient should be between 80 - 90 F. A perfect setup for a young blood python woul be a plastic shoe box with holes drilled for ventilation. A large container with water place inside will assure humidity levels at 60 - 70 % at all times, and occational extra misting - especially during shedding - would raise it to 80 - 90 %. As substrate I recommend clean unprinted newsprint paper.
