Comments: We found a snapper near our pond and thought it looked a little different from others we had seen previously. Thanks to your information we now know it must have been an older one we saw today, as the ridges were almost gone on its back. We do remove th snappers and relocate them to a protected swamp area about a mile from our home, as we have koi in our pond and would like to keep them. We do keep the small turtles that aren't snappers and they always seem to leave in the winter and we see new ones th next year. Again, thank you for your information and photos. There are other sites but none with the extensive descriptions and photos.

Comments: our turtle is just a baby and doesn't seem to eat. We put pellets in the water but he doesn't seem to consume them. Should we have a water filter, and should we be feeding him live fish and vegetation? Would very much appreciate your help as we can't go to a pet store and inquire, as snappers are illegal in Alberta. Don't ask. Thanks in advance for your help. Ken

Comments: Ha! I had no idea so many people were interested in snapping turtles. I used to work with and care for alligator and common snappers in Louisiana (used for education, not soup). However, I'm a little more fond of the alligator snappers than the common. ood Luck.

Comments: I'm a former reptile keeper for a zoo in Louisiana, and dealt with several large alligator snappers. Fortunatly, they're a little more mellow than commons, as the largest of the group out wighed me by over 100 pounds! While in Louisiana an allisator snapp r was found with an authentic musket ball grown into it's shell. It is now believed these animals may live well beyond the 100 year mark. While I'm not really a lover of these species, I do find them interesting.

Comments: Hey, Thanks again for the info on this page and the responses to my emails, great page building job here! I can't wait until I get my first snapper, and who knows, I may just decide to really get into this =) I used to keep some sliders and a false map turtle when I was younger, but I released them all as I got busier with nonsense of all kinds (school). I've helped re-locate some snappers from bad spots and I even caught a huge one (at LEAST 18 inch carapace while fishing one day by accident. When I realized it was a turtle and not some kinda record carp, I slacked the line and the hood popped free, it actually appeared he was just holding onto it, not really hooked. I have always loved turtles and I'm rea ly eager to get back into keeping them! Thanks again, Clayton Apgar - former and soon to be once again turtle owner.

Comments: I got a baby eastern snapping turtle as a pet from my teacher who raises them about years ago. My little Jebba was about quarter-sized when I got him, but then began to grow and grow and GROW! He was 6 inches long and strong enough to bite my finger off w en I released him into the wild last summer. I keep checking the pond where I released him, but I haven't seen him yet. My dad took video of the whole release. It was very interesting. Jebba had never been in the wild before, but he knew exactly what to d . He buried himself in the mud for a few minutes while he got his bearings, then he swam off. We watched him for maybe 20 minutes, but then he went under and we never saw him again. Comments: I was looking for a little info as I started with my snapper Gamara when he came out of the nest last August about the 15th 1999! I put him in my fish aquarium where for now he is living with my fish! I feed him a lot. He has grown to 2 3/4 inch in lenght by 2 1/4 wide measured on his carapice. He is laying in the sun right now! Not hiding! He comes to me to eat and does so fom my fingers, which you said is going to get dangerous soon. Please tell me it is not so!

Comments: I was on vacation the end of August '99, and found my snapper scurrying across a back road. I believe it (I don't know how to tell if it is a he or she:>0 ) was around a month old. So now my hardy little snapper is the full size of the palm of my hand and I love him/her. I pick up my turtle every day a d talk to him/her. So far, I haven't been snapped at and I am VERY Carful since I know he can be lightning quick! I looked up your site hoping to find out the best way to care for "Mudpie". He/she is in a 10 gal. tank and I have a few large rocks and about 5 inches of water which I find I have to change every other day (I removed the gravel because it got so mucky. Now I have to clean often!) The feed I use are aquatic turtle pellets, crickets and feeder fish. Can you give me any personal insight to a better way to maintain the tank? Is my filter too inadequate? Should I put the gravel back in? The turtle seems to want to dig as well. What can I do for him/her? Also are there turtles "Playthings" I can put in the tank for him? Anyway, thank you for your time and hope I didn't ask too many questions. I just want Mudpie to be as happy as can be! Kathlee
